IOWA
Iowa is a U.S. state in the Midwestern United States, bordered by the Mississippi River on the east and the Missouri River and the Big Sioux River on the west. Surrounding states include Wisconsin and Illinois to the east, Missouri to the south, Nebraska and South Dakota to the west, and Minnesota to the north.
In colonial times, Iowa was a part of French Louisiana and Spanish Louisiana; its state flag is patterned after the flag of France. After the Louisiana Purchase, settlers laid the foundation for an agriculture-based economy in the heart of the Corn Belt.
In the latter half of the 20th century, Iowa's agricultural economy made the transition to a diversified economy of advanced manufacturing, processing, financial services, information technology, biotechnology, and green energy production. Iowa is the 26th most extensive in land area and the 30th most populous of the 50 United States.
Iowa has been listed as one of the safest states in which to live. Its nickname is the Hawkeye State.

Economy: The deep, porous soil yields corn and other grains in tremendous quantities, and the corn-fed hogs and cattle are nationally known. In 1997, Iowa led the nation in the production of corn, soybeans, hogs, and pigs, and ranked in the top 10 in the raising of cattle. Other major crops are hay and oats. Iowa has in recent years taken in the second highest farm income of any state.
Agriculture also benefits the state's chief industry, food processing, and in Sioux City and Cedar Rapids many factories process farm products. Nonelectrical machinery, farm machinery, tires, appliances, electronic equipment, and chemicals are among the other manufactures. Cement is the most important mineral product; others are stone, sand, gravel, and gypsum. Mineral production is small, however. Communications, finance, and insurance industries are especially important in Des Moines.
Tourism: Tourism in Iowa has been growing significantly (5.94 per cent) beating the national average of 5.78 per cent over the past five years, according to Shawna Lode, manager of the Iowa Economic Development Authority’s Iowa Tourism Office. “In 2015 we expect about 1.5 million people to visit our website, traveliowa.com, an increase of approximately 40 percent from 2014.” Travelers spent $8.06 billion in Iowa and generated $374 million in state tax revenues in 2014, both all-time highs.
More than 66,500 Iowans owe their employment to the tourism industry, a 1.6 percent increase from 2013. Without jobs generated by domestic travel, Iowa’s 2014 unemployment rate of 4.4 percent would have been 8.3 percent, said Jessica O’Riley, of Iowa Economic Development Authority, Iowa Tourism Office.
No state provides a more concentrated taste of America’s Heartland than Iowa. Home to one of the country’s classic state fairs and Kevin Costner’s corn field-turned-baseball-diamond from the book & movie ‘Field of Dreams’, Iowa serves up memory-packed road trips (www.midwestliving.com/dreamtrip) of quintessential Iowa experiences.
Herbert C. Hoover and Harry L. Hopkins were born in Iowa. Herbert Hoover National Historic Site, which contains Hoover's birthplace, childhood home, and grave, and the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library are at West Branch.
